More than 170 student scholars to be honored by C Spire Wireless, Commercial Appeal Media during awards program on Friday in areas of achievement, leadership, good character and community service

Memphis, Tenn. (May 3, 2012) – C Spire Wireless and Commercial Appeal Media will recognize student scholars from Memphis area high schools on Friday, May 4 for excellence in academics, leadership and community service during the 2011-2012 C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards program.

More than 170 student scholars and their parents and family members are expected to attend to awards program at the Hilton Memphis, which will present 11 students with awards in 10 curriculum categories, including art, drama and speech, English and literature, foreign language, general scholarship, mathematics, music, science, social sciences and history and career-technical.

This year's group of 11 overall award recipients includes one of three Tennessee students selected as a Presidential Scholar by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. This student is the only one from West Tennessee to be part of the 48th class of Presidential Scholars.

Now in its sixth year, the C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards are presented weekly over 28 weeks during the academic year from nominations submitted by school administrators from 93 participating high schools in the Bartlett- Cordova, Germantown-Collierville, DeSoto County, Millington-Tipton areas and city of Memphis.

“Our goal is to show these young people that their accomplishments, discipline and work ethic make a difference and are important ingredients for growing a rich, thriving economy in this region,” said Jim Richmond, director of Corporate Communications for C Spire Wireless. “We want these high achievers to see Memphis and the Mid-South region as a place they want to live and begin their professional careers after college.”

2011-2012 recipients include National Merit Scholarship winners, Advanced Placement scholars, a Tennessee All-Star Band member, attendees of Tennessee Governor’s Schools and one member of the 48th class of Presidential Scholars who was selected from among 3,300 candidates nationwide by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars for the honor.
