Humanoid robot will greet make first appearance at company retail store during celebration
Starkville, Miss., (July 27, 2017) -
C Spire customers will get their first chance to meet and interact with Pepper, a four-foot tall humanoid robot, at a customer appreciation party in Jackson this week that will also feature food, door prizes, special offers and free consumer electronics with qualifying purchases.
The wireless unit for C Spire, a Mississippi-based telecommunications and technology services company, is sponsoring the celebration and the first guest appearance for Pepper in a retail setting since the firm acquired four of the robots earlier this year from Softbank Robotics America.
Pepper, which has a tablet affixed to the front of her chest, will meet and greet customers at the company’s Starkville store, 337 Highway 12 West from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, July 28, according to C Spire Market Manager Joe Wilson.
“Robotics and artificial intelligence are the next big frontiers in technology and C Spire intends to be a leader in helping consumers experience all the benefits of the coming golden age of personal service,” Wilson said. “We want to make sure that robotics and AI work for our customers and help improve their quality of life.”
C Spire and Pepper are partnering with the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education to encourage customers to donate school supplies for students when they visit the Starkville store. “MAPE does an outstanding job of partnering with schools, non-profits and businesses to help fill the needs for all our schools,” Wilson said.
In addition to greeting customers, Pepper will try to do her part to encourage school supply donations as well. The robot has a body and arms that move in 17 directions and a head filled with sensors and doe-like eyes accented by lights and can tell if you’re happy or sad and detect by the tone of your voice if there’s a problem.
Consumer and business adoption and use of robotics is growing around the world, according to Ballard. Over 10,000 Pepper robots are in use around the world, including at a Pizza Hut in Singapore, on cruise ships, in airports and in homes across Japan.
C Spire and Pepper will serve food and distribute door prizes, football tickets, mobile phone accessories and the Samsung Gear VR. Customers also can get a free LG tablet when they activate the device and a qualifying data plan, a free digital TV when they activate an LG G6 smartphone and $100 off a Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone.
